Cherry angiomas, also commonly known as cherry spots or Campbell de Morgan spots, are small, harmless red, dark red, or purple skin growths caused by clusters of tiny blood vessels beneath the skin’s surface. These vascular lesions often appear as small pinhead-sized dots or raised bumps and are most commonly found on the chest, abdomen, arms, shoulders, and legs.
Cherry angiomas are extremely common, particularly after the age of 30, and tend to increase in number over time. While they are completely benign and do not usually cause medical concern, many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons, especially when they become more noticeable, catch on clothing, or affect confidence.
At JLClinical in Hawarden, near Chester. I offer safe and effective cherry angioma removal using advanced electrolysis and cryotherapy treatments tailored to your skin type and the size of the lesion.
Advanced electrolysis is a highly effective treatment for removing cherry angiomas quickly and precisely. During the procedure, a fine sterile probe delivers a controlled electrical current directly into the cherry spot, instantly cauterising the tiny blood vessels responsible for the red appearance.
Once treated, the trapped blood within the capillaries is naturally reabsorbed by the body, causing the cherry angioma to fade and disappear. The lesion is usually removed immediately, although mild redness, slight swelling, or temporary darkening of the area is completely normal following treatment.
A small scab may form during the healing process and should be allowed to fall away naturally. Over the following weeks, the skin gradually returns to its normal colour and texture. As with any minor skin procedure, there is a small risk of scarring, particularly if the area becomes infected or the healing skin is picked.
Cryotherapy is another popular treatment option for cherry angioma removal. This non-invasive procedure uses extreme cold to freeze and destroy the blood vessels within the lesion. The freezing process causes the vessels to constrict and collapse, leading the cherry spot to darken before forming a protective scab.
Over the next 4–6 weeks, the scab naturally falls away to reveal clearer skin underneath. Some clients may experience mild redness, irritation, or a blister within the first 48 hours after treatment. This is a normal part of the healing process and should not be interfered with.
Cryotherapy is particularly suitable for smaller cherry spots, while larger or raised lesions often respond better to advanced electrolysis treatment.
Multiple cherry angiomas can often be treated during a single 30-minute appointment, making treatment both convenient and cost-effective. During your consultation, your skin will be carefully assessed and a personalised treatment plan created based on the number, size, and location of the lesions.
