Seborrhoeic keratosis is a very common, non-cancerous (benign) skin growth that typically appears as people age. These growths can develop individually or in clusters and are usually brown, black, or light tan in colour. They often have a waxy, scaly, or slightly raised appearance and may feel rough to the touch.
Seborrhoeic keratoses develop gradually and are most commonly found on the face, neck, chest, and back. Although they are harmless and do not require medical treatment, many people choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons or if they become irritated by clothing, jewellery, or daily friction.
At JLClinical in Hawarden, I offer safe and effective seborrhooeic keratosis removal using advanced electrolysis and cryotherapy, depending on the size, thickness, and location of the lesion.
Advanced electrolysis is a highly precise and effective treatment for the removal of seborrhoeic keratosis. The procedure works by gently lifting the edge of the growth and carefully removing it from the skin using a fine sterile probe. The area is then cauterised to promote controlled healing and reduce bleeding.
The growth is removed immediately, leaving a small superficial wound in its place that heals naturally over time.
As with any skin procedure, there is a small risk of scarring, particularly if the area becomes infected or the healing scab is disturbed.
Cryotherapy is an effective alternative treatment for seborrhoeic keratosis, particularly for clients who do not require immediate removal. This method uses controlled extreme cold to freeze and destroy the abnormal skin cells, allowing the body to naturally shed the lesion over time.
Cryotherapy does not create an open wound, which may reduce the risk of scarring. However, in some cases, temporary pigmentation changes such as a lighter (hypopigmented) or darker mark may remain if the skin does not fully re-pigment.
Thicker or more established seborrheic keratoses may require two treatment sessions spaced approximately 4 weeks apart for optimal results.
Following either treatment, proper aftercare is essential to support healing and achieve the best cosmetic results:
Sun protection is especially important to prevent pigmentation changes and support healthy skin recovery.
One to three small/medium seborrhoeic keratoses can typically be treated in a single 30-minute appointment, making treatment quick, efficient, and convenient.
Larger or more extensive areas of seborrheic keratosis may require longer treatment sessions or multiple visits over several weeks to achieve the best results safely and effectively.
At JLClinical, I specialise in advanced skin lesion removal treatments designed to safely improve skin appearance and comfort. Every client receives a full consultation and personalised treatment plan based on the type, size, and location of their seborrheic keratosis.
