Warts and verrucae are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), which infects the outer layer of the skin. The virus can enter through tiny breaks in the skin and may spread through direct contact or shared surfaces such as swimming pools, changing rooms and gym facilities. While some warts disappear naturally over time, others can persist for months or even years without treatment.

Many warts and verrucae respond very well to treatment, although because they are caused by a virus, more than one session is generally required. Cryotherapy is often effective for common warts and verrucae, while advanced electrolysis may be recommended for stubborn warts or certain facial warts where immediate removal is preferred. Following treatment, mild redness, tenderness, blistering or scabbing may occur as part of the normal healing process. As the area heals, the wart gradually reduces and healthy skin is restored.
